Suspect rapes 94-year-old woman

Johannesburg – A man who benefited from President Jacob Zuma’s special remissions programme appeared in court on Thursday for allegedly raping a 94-year-old grandmother.
Spokesman of South African Police Service (SAPS), Col. Vincent Mdunge, told newsmen in Johannesburg that the suspect is “a habitual criminal’’.
He said that the suspect appeared at the New Hanover Magistrate Court on Thursday.
“The woman was raped in her KwaSwayimane home in Emabheleni Ward, at 1.00 a.m. on Saturday.
“Police have been looking for him for another case,” Mdunge said.
Mdunge confirmed that the suspect had been one of the 3,150 granted presidential parole, and that police had been searching for him for his part in an armed robbery case before the rape.
KwaZulu-Natal Correctional Services Commissioner, Mnikelwa Nxele, confirmed that the suspect had been released at the start of the presidential remission in June.
Nxele said that the alleged rape was regrettable and sad.

Gunmen Kill 3 in Borno

Maiduguri -  The police on Thursday confirmed the killing of three persons by unknown gunmen, who attacked Gubio, headquarters of Gubio Local Government Area of Borno.
Alhaji Bala Hassan, the state Commissioner of Police, told newsmen in Maiduguri that the attack took place on Wednesday.
Hassan explained that the victims included two policemen and a civilian, adding that the police had launched a manhunt for the attackers.
“We have not made any arrest yet but we have spread our dragnet for them. We are combing the entire area in search of them. We will get them sooner or later,’’ he said.
However, residents had earlier told newsmen that a group of about 10 gunmen had invaded the town located about 85 kilometres from Maiduguri in the evening.
“Some gunmen invaded the town in the evening shortly after Muslims had broken their fast for the day.
“They went straight to the Gubio Police Station where they attacked the officers on duty before heading for the Local Government secretariat,’’ Mr Modu Ibrahim, a resident, said.
Ibrahim added that the attackers also burnt down part of the secretariat before fleeing to an unknown destination.
It will be recalled that two Indians were killed on Wednesday in Maiduguri by unknown gunmen, who attacked the Gum Arabic factory.

Two men in court for stabbing another over girlfriend

Lagos – The police in Lagos on Thursday arraigned two businessmen who allegedly stabbed a man all over his body because of a girlfriend.
Chukwuebuka Ejiofor (28) and Ekene Kanu (30) appeared before a Surulere Magistrates’ Court on a two-count charge of conspiracy and assault.
Ejiofor and Kanu, who reside at 8, Amusa St., Bale, Orile-Iganmu, and 6, Agbonyin Ave., Surulere, respectively, pleaded not guilty.
The prosecutor, Gabriel Ekundayo, said that the duo conspired and stabbed one John Paul on July 22 at a hotel at  Coker, Orile-Iganmu, in a dispute over Paul’s girlfriend.
Ekundayo said that trouble began when Paul saw the girlfriend, Miss Oluchi Nwachukwu, (18), in the company of the accused where they were drinking beer in the hotel premises.
The prosecutor said that Paul demanded that the girlfriend should follow him.
“He accosted her to ask of her mission in the hotel but the men said that the lady belonged to them, and that he cannot take her away.
“Before Paul could say another word, they broke bottles and stabbed him severally all over his body,’’ the prosecutor said.
He said that Paul was still receiving treatment in a hospital.
The prosecutor said that the offences contravened sections 407 and 171 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State, 2011.
Magistrate M.A. Ladipo granted the accused bail in the sum of N200,000 each with two sureties in like sum.
